I write for children. It’s hard. Here’s why:

  1. Kids don’t give you 60 pages to get to the point.
  2. They know bull when they read it.
  3. They understand that adverbs mask a weak verb. (in other words, see point #1)
  4. You have to win them over. Every book.

To misquote Chesterton: Kids don’t need me to explain that monsters exist. I just have to show them monsters can be killed.
